In the beginning—because your newborn has such a tiny stomach—they will need to be fed quite regularly, like every few hours. However, as the baby grows they will need less time to feed as their stomach is growing too.

It is recommended you should exclusively breastfeed for around the first six months after birth, and introduce other foods after six months. You can keep breastfeeding as long as you like thereafter. The longer you breastfeed the better it is for your child while they continue to grow.

Your baby will provide signs that it is hungry. It is an important reaction that we call responsive feeding. Not only will your baby get the milk they desire, but also a sense of comfort and reassurance.

It depends: it may range from frequent short feeding to longer, or even in-between. You should know instinctively when your baby is full.

Your baby will most likely fall asleep on your breasts after ten to forty minutes. Your breast milk contains a hormone that naturally puts your baby to sleep. A feed will slowly become erratic, and eventually cease.

Breasts never run out of milk. Even if the baby is really hungry, you will still make milk.

A newborn tends to feed on the same breast for a couple of weeks. Thereafter they may require more milk and should then be moved to the other breast. You will realise this as your baby will generally show signs of dissatisfaction by crying, headbutting or tugging at the breast. They may start and stop, and these are general signs that you need to change.

Don't worry! That will normally not happen as almost everyone makes enough milk. When you feed the baby, more milk is made as part of your natural cycle.
